Hooray for Friday, friends!

Spring Break is here!  Good news: we have no real plans!  One of my sons (4th grader) has to do a report on a city in Colorado for his class project in which he talks about the city’s historical significance, its demographics, its commerce, etc. I promised to drive us all to whatever city he chooses and we’ll all enjoy a family field trip.  He has chosen Trinidad, CO. For those of you who may not know, Trinidad, CO has been dubbed the sex change capitol of the world.  His teacher and I exchanged emails and we have concluded the 4th grade class is not ready for a report on this topic. So we are going to focus on the old-west history that also exists within this lovely little town.

I won a couple of fun things this week!

Leah Petersen’s 5-Minute Fiction contest is on week two of its blog tour at Monica’s blog. The prompt was: Lazy.  My piece this week was voted the winner!  Hooray!  I am in love with this contest, and not because I’ve been a finalist a couple of times either. The act of writing in this way has shifted my routine a bit, and my mindset about my writing.  The result: I am now writing more. I have also connected with several new writers whose work is inpiring and whose tweets are witty and fun.  So, check out Leah’s blog post about the rest of this tour for details, notice my new blog tab dedicated to compiling my entries for this contest, and mark your calendar for 1:30pm EST every Tuesday to take part in the fun.

Tahereh Mafi tweeted yesterday: Pick a number any number! So I chose 17 and won a pair of new YA releases from her stack. Hooray for me! For my spoils I chose: SEAN GRISWOLD’S HEAD and TIMELESS.  Hooray for books!

In case you are wondering who this Tahereh Mafi is, let me enlighten you. She’s had some awesome news with her novel, SHATTER ME.

To wit: HARPERCOLLINS ACQUIRES HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED DYSTOPIAN TRILOGY FROM DEBUT AUTHOR TAHEREH MAFI IN MAJOR PRE-EMPT DEAL.  The first novel, Shatter Me, to be published November 2011. Foreign rights to Shatter Me have already been sold in thirteen countries after a series of unprecedented pre-emptive offers were received within days of submission. Rights have been sold to Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Sweden, and Turkey.

She also happens to be hilarious!  So, follow her blog, twitter, and pre-order this baby on Amazon.

Agent Pitch Contest. I’m in. Are you? Bop over to YAtopia – Super agent Ammi-Joan Paquette has so kindly offered to host a pitch contest on YAtopia. And seeing as she’s currently closed to submissions, this is an opportunity you simply CANNOT miss out on.  http://yatopia.blogspot.com/2011/03/agent-pitch-contest.html

Japan – It has been a strange week of ups and downs.  The news from Japan continues to overwhelm. Reports yesterday spoke about how workers from the Fukushima nuclear compound said goodbye to their families and sacrificed themselves to go back into the contaminated plant in order to help contain the radiation and try to prevent a complete meltdown. Can you imagine standing in what used to be your home town but is now a complete mess of chaos and death and disorder and having to make such a decision for the betterment of the people who will be left behind?  I cannot.

I’ll say it again:

If you can give money, then consider a donation to these fabulous organizations:

If you cannot give, please pray.  Pray to your God, pray to the Universe, pray to the Air. The world needs good healing thoughts today and every day.  We are all connected.
