I am pleased to be hosting Hawai’i-based author, Austin Aslan!
Austin Aslan is the author of the highly-acclaimed eco-thriller series The Islands at the End of the World. The Guardian recently ranked his debut novel as a top-ten read in the awakening genre of climate fiction, and Kirkus Reviews hailed the series opener as a “Best Book of 2014.”
Austin earned a master’s degree in tropical conservation biology while living with his wife and two children on the Big Island of Hawai’i. A Northern Arizona native and long-distance backpacker, he can often be found exploring the world’s last wild places while sleeping on a punctured air mattress. Follow his globetrotting and outdoor adventures on both Facebook and Twitter at “Laustinspace,” and on the Gore-Tex® “Experience More” blog.
“In this fast-paced survival story set in Hawaii, electronics fail worldwide, the islands become completely isolated, and a strange starscape fills the sky. Leilani and her father embark on a nightmare odyssey from Oahu to their home on the Big Island. Leilani’s epilepsy holds a clue to the disaster, if only they can survive as the islands revert to earlier ways. A powerful story enriched by fascinating elements of Hawaiian ecology, culture, and warfare, this captivating and dramatic debut from Austin Aslan is the first of two novels.”
Wow… I can think of at least *26* reasons to pick up this book!!
And now for some EXCLUSIVE BONUS MATERIAL from Austin Aslan:
The Query Letter that landed him his agent!
Dear J…. J…,
I have always been very impressed with Janklow & Nesbit Associates and I have been eager to query you with my new manuscript. I believe that you would be a great match for my 90,000-word The Islands at the End of the World, a YA speculative fiction (with a hint of Sci-Fi) set in Hawai`i during a global catastrophe.
Ninety-five percent of the food consumed by residents of Hawaii is imported. What do you suppose would become of the over-populated island paradise if the cargo ships suddenly stopped arriving?
Leilani Milton is a hapa haole (half white, half Hawaiian) high school sophomore living in rainy Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Battling severe epilepsy, she struggles to fit in among her classmates and to earn the approval of her akua (Hawaiian gods, ancestors, and family guardians). She travels with her father to Honolulu to participate in a clinical trial for new epilepsy medication, and they unexpectedly find themselves stranded on O`ahu when all electronics and means of communication cease to function. Dismayed islanders turn their gaze to what has been locally dubbed the “Emerald Orchid,” a mysterious, cloud-like anomaly that has begun to hover over the Earth. As days of isolation, confusion, and dysfunction turn to weeks, pressures mount. The ships and the planes stop arriving from the mainland, and, as a million derelict Hawaiians battle for table scraps, Leilani and her father must traverse a nightmare landscape of escalating perils in a harrowing struggle to return home and reunite with their family.
When Leilani discovers that her misfiring brain may hold the key to the mystery of the Emerald Orchid, she must confront her disorder and face a desperate choice as the fate of her family and her world lies in the balance.
We all know ad nauseum what happens to New York’s masses during the “End Times,” but now readers can explore what becomes of a forgotten few stranded on the world’s most isolated island chain. While capitalizing on the very real dilemma of a state facing serious sustainability issues, this novel aims to blend page-turning excitement with the powerful parent-child dynamics and myopic intensity of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (though, alas: my sentences contain verbs). Coincidentally, it would seem that J.J. Abram’s newest T.V. series premiering this fall shares some innovative elements with my work. I take this as a good sign that audiences remain enthusiastic about intelligent “blackout” narratives, and I’m confident that my story is different enough to synergistically play off of Chicago-based Revolution. As a resident of Hilo, Hawai`i, I channeled my relationship with my own daughter in writing this chilling adventure. While Leilani and her father face imaginative challenges and plot twists along their journey home, this odyssey focuses primarily on a strong and memorable father-daughter relationship that will resonate with readers long after they finish turning the pages.
I am currently studying for my Masters degree at UH-Hilo. I hope to make writing into a career and I’m seeking a long-term relationship with an agent who will push me to success in a variety of genres. The first chapter is attached as a Word doc. May I please send you more? The full ms is available at your request. This is an exclusive query for one week and I am eager to hear back from you.
Thank you very much!
